EUWelNet Project Proposal to SANCO successfully passed evaluation

Welfare Quality Network partners together with partners in the AWARE project applied successfully for a grant from the European Commission (SANCO 2012/10293). The project, called EUWelNet, aims to study the feasibility of a coordinated European animal welfare network. In brief, our project will address four main objectives:

  • establish and coordinate a network of experts;
  • identify bottlenecks/ difficulties in implementing a few examples of EU legislation on animal welfare;
  • develop and test knowledge transfer strategies to overcome bottlenecks;
  • analyse and make recommendations on the feasibility and conditions for a coordinated network.

All the partners in the Welfare Quality Network and the AWARE project, 26 and 14 respectively, were invited to participate in this proposal (due to overlap this constitutes 34 institutions of which 3 are in candidate countries). The majority of them responded positively and, together with some additional experts, the current consortium brings together 26 partners with a wide range of expertise (technical, scientific and educational) in a number of different disciplines and with broad geographical spread. The 16 countries represented are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and United Kingdom.

The project will start towards the end of 2012 and will run for one year.
